PH Dad Sells Company To Travel The World With His Family

Garrett is a Filipino-American and is the co-founder of Scan, a company that was later acquired by Snapchat for $54 million. Scan was formed in 2011 with two of Garrett’s friends, Kirk Quimet and Ben Turley. Snapchat eventually used it to develop the “Snapcode”.While Garrett enjoyed his entrepreneurial drive, it wasn't long before he grew tired of the "office life" and decided to embark on a trip around the world.Speaking to Business Insider, Garrett shared that while he loved what he was doing, he suddenly felt that he wasn't taking the right path towards his happiness. His co-founders understood his predicament and were willing to let him step out, but on the condition that he helped raise the company's numbers before leaving. Soon after, the trio appeared on ABC’s “Shark Tank”, where they first caught the attention of the Snapchat founders.

Suffice to say, Garrett and his co-partners were paid a hefty sum for their company. But even then, Garrett was adamant that he not spend a single dime out of his Snapchat pay check to pay for his trips. Ergo, he and Jessica arranged a garage sale, where they sold all of their belongings to finance the great six-month round-the-world escapade.The couple managed to raise over $45,000. As of 2017, the family of four has already traveled to 23 countries. They've had a total of 43 flights, 11 rental cars, and seven train rides.

However, just as their fund was dwindling before the sixth month mark, Garrett found another way to earn money. A natural entrepreneur, he created an online brand based on their current travel itinerary. He and Jessica began using all of the popular social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat – to document their family's journey.Eighteen months into launching their brand, the couple turned towards blogging. “The Bucket List Family” has received over 455,000 followers on Instagram and 41, 500 YouTube subscribers. It's become so profitable that they've decided to make their life on the road permanent.Initially, clients were offering only accommodations or flights in exchange for marketing exposure. But as “The Bucket List Family” grew, clients began shelling out monetary payments. Reportedly, Garrett and Jessica spend at least 20 hours a week promoting their brand. As of writing time, the family still hasn't tapped into the Snapchat pay check despite having been on the go for almost two years.Go travel with your family.
