Crucifixion in Pampanga: Everything You Need To Know

Participants and Schedule

Every year, on Good Friday, penitents – who are mostly men and sometimes women – are nailed to a cross on a rice field in San Pedro Cutud. The participants who have their hands and feet temporarily nailed to the cross are usually devout believers – penitents - who are performing these sacrifices as personal penance as they seek atonement for their sins and misdoings. The forms of penitence have changed throughout the years. In addition to the crucifixion, others go through alternative forms of sacrifice that include self-flagellation (magsalibatbat or magdarame), carrying a wooden cross as well as crawling on the public streets (kukusad).

The Catholics who participate in the event come from varied backgrounds and residences for a number of different reasons. They often believe that these extreme lengths are a way to gain absolution, attain divine intervention (miracles) or to simply give thanks and glory to the Lord. There are also people who take part in the pageant as roman guards and supporters of Jesus during the commemoration of Jesus’ final sacrifice. There are many individuals who undergo the ritual each year.

However, it is important to take note that these annual traditions are not endorsed or sanctioned by the Catholic Church. They are considered self-punishment and extreme displays of devotion. The Passion Play and Crucifixion begins at 3 pm and signals the culmination of the re-enactment. Individuals are nailed to wooden crosses on a makeshift Calvary using alcohol-soaked, two-inch nails. On average, penitents stay on the cross anywhere between five to 10 minutes.
