What You Need to Know About the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has already infected thousands of people in the Philippines.

Before you panic, it’s best to educate yourself about the matter and learn the necessary steps to take to prevent being infected with the virus.

What is Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus disease is a type of virus that infects the nose, sinuses, and upper throat.

In December 2019, it caused an outbreak of respiratory illness in Wuhan, a city in Central China. Reports said that most patients involved in the outbreak were initially linked to a seafood market, suggesting that the virus was due to an animal-to-person spread. However, it now seems to be spreading from person to person.

Symptoms and Complications of Coronavirus

Coronavirus patients have reportedly experienced mild to severe illness with symptoms of:

  • Fever
  • Cough and Colds
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Difficulty in Breathing
  • High Body Temperature

According to reports and medical studies, these symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as two weeks after exposure.

If you have traveled to any country with a confirmed case in the last 14 days and developed any of the aforementioned symptoms, call a doctor right away. This should also be the case if you had been in close contact with someone showing these symptoms.

Prevention and Treatment

Although experts are still trying to come up with a vaccine that can prevent the coronavirus infection, the best thing you can do is avoid exposure to the virus. Experts recommend the following steps to keep the virus from spreading:

  • Frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol will do.
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid contact with people who are ill. If you’re the one who is sick, it’s recommended to stay at home.
  • When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth or nose with a tissue. Properly dispose of the tissue afterward.
  • Disinfect the objects and surfaces you regularly touch.
  • Use quality face masks for added protection, especially when you’re outside.
  • Get enough rest to boost your immune system.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Thoroughly cook eggs and meat.

Make these steps a habit to lessen the chance of getting the virus. As they say, prevention is better than cure.

Flight Advisories From Airlines

If you’re planning to visit China and/or other countries with confirmed cases, it might be beneficial to reschedule the flight to a later date. Avoiding routes to Wuhan and nearby places is also highly recommended.

Airlines such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia have released travel advisories to manage the risks of the virus. These airlines are also offering passengers with flights to mainland China the chance to rebook their trip or get a refund. For more information on canceled flights or to get your flights rebooked or get a refund, it is advised that you contact the airline directly.
